Everyone is a Runner?Like it or not, Everyone is a runner. Eagles are meant to fly, fish are meant to swim, we are meant to run. If you were an eagle, wouldn't you want to fly?
If you have little to no experience running, that is okay, you have come to the right place. This is a website for those interested or new to either a school Distance running team, or a competitive running club. BEGINNING Steps My name Is Miguel Erives and i was a member of the Albuquerque High school's Cross Country and Track long Distance teams. My freshmen year i had to make a list of everything i hated. Number three in my list was running. I remember running a mile for P.E. my freshmen year. The first timed mile i had ever ran was a 6:54 (without training). To put it into perspective, an average Male JV Runner can run a 6:00-5:30 minute Mile. It wasn't until the end of my junior year of the wrestling season when i decided to give Distance Track a try. The reason i began to wrestle was because it was considered to have the toughest training in any sport within the school. Throughout one season about half would quit.
Distance track caught my attention because it was the only sport that wrestlers had quit because it was too hard. I'm not saying that one sport is harder than the other. I was surprised because wrestlers usually quit other sports because they were too easy. Once i joined i still didn't like running, but i kept beating people, and beating people felt good. I decided to stay because i felt that i could catch up and compete against the top runners in the state. Why Did Humans Begin to Run?Humans have evolved into (or created to be) one of the most efficient distance runners to ever exist on this planet. Our body's Physiology gives us the ability to withstand running for long distances at a time. Scientists agree that our Running ability gave us a hunting advantage over other carnivores. Chasing prey for long distances also known as persistence hunting, which Emerged about about 2 million years ago. Unlike Humans, prey (or other predators) do not have the ability to cool down, nor free Limbs to carry water Supply. During a Persistent hunt, the Creature would eventually collapse from exhaustion and possible wounds sustained from the hunter.
Later in our history, running was used to send messages in time of war. As new advances in transportation, running became obsolete. Running became less of a necessity and more of a sport. |
Tribes in the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa still use Persistence Hunting!
